The Absent Father Effect on Daughters: Father Desire & Father Wounds
The Father Image and the Feminine in the Psyche
Recorded Seminar with Susan E. Schwartz, PhD
This recording provides access to the seminar originally presented by Susan E. Schwartz, PhD, exploring father absence, father desire, and father wounds through the perspective of Jungian analytical psychology.
A father’s absence may be physical, but it may also take the form of emotional unavailability, disconnection from his own affective life, or an inability to be psychologically present.
From a Jungian perspective, the effects of father absence cannot be understood solely in relation to the actual father. The father complex, father archetype, and unconscious father images may continue to influence self-worth, body image, relational patterns, experiences of authority, recognition, and the ways in which the individual seeks value and affirmation.
While the father–daughter relationship provides the central point of departure, the seminar is not limited to daughters or women. The feminine is approached as a psychological and symbolic dimension of the psyche across genders, allowing for a broader exploration of the relationship between the father image and the feminine.
The seminar also considers how unconscious father images may become constellated in adult relationships and how these psychic contents may be approached within the process of individuation.
